Junwang Tang
Chief Scientist
Prof. Junwang Tang: Member of Academia Europaea, Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellow, Fellow of European Academy of Sciences, Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry. He used to be the director of University Materials Hub, the chair professor of materials chemistry and materials engineering at Department of Chemical Engineering, University College London. He is concurrently the vice chairman of the Association of British Chinese Professors, the president of UK Shaanxi Association and the director of the overseas student association of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Junwang Tang has rich research experience about microwave catalysis and microwave intensive processes. He has publised over 220 scientific papers (H-index of 72) in Nature Catalysis, Nature Energy, Nature Reviews Materials, Chemical Reviews, Chem. Soc. Rev. Materials Today, JACS, Nature Communications, Angew Chemie and other energy and chemical journals. He is one of the Highly Cited Researchers of Clarivate Analytics 2022. He has 14 patents authorized or applied, including the patents in the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, etc. He is the editor-in-chief, editor or deputy editor-in-chief of four international journals, including Applied Catalysis B, Journal of Advanced Chemical Engineering, Chin J. Catal. and Asia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering. He generally has 5-6 invited talks at relevant international conferences every year. He won multiple international awards, including: 2022 IChemE Oil and Gas Global Awards, 2021 IChemE Andrew Medal (one winner in heterogeneous catalysis every 3 years in the world ), 2021 RSC Corday-Morgan Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry (three global selections each year, the only Asian winner so far), 2021 Royal Society-Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellow of the Royal Academy of Sciences (7 in the UK every year), 2021 IChemE Innovative Product Award, the second place in the 2020 International Association of Chemical Engineering Research Project Award, 2019 IChemE Business Start-Up Global Awards, 2018 International Photochemical and Solar Energy Conversion Scientist Award (IPS Scientist Award received at the 22nd IPS conference), etc.
His main research achievements include: i) The large-scale preparation technology of high-quality graphene, which has taken a solid step for the industrialization of graphene; ii) The most refractory plastics was decomposed into monomeric materials via microwave catalytic conversion with high selectivity, which had made a contribution to the realization of the recycling of plastics; iii) It is the first time to report the photocatalytic conversion of methane to methanol and ethanol at room temperature, with a selectivity of 97%; iv) He reported the photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol at room temperature using carbon quantum dots with a selectivity of nearly 100%. It is still the highest efficiency at present; v) For the first time in the world, the experimental evidence that four holes are needed for heterogeneous photocatalytic water oxidation is given. Meanwhile, the kinetics of water splitting to produce hydrogen is illustrated, and the catalysts for water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen are developed. And then green hydrogen is stored in green ammonia via the pathway of ammonia synthesis.
